GOOGONG CELEBRATES GOVERNMENT PLANS TO BUILD THE COMMUNITY'S FIRST PUBLIC SCHOOL

The Googong community has welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to build the community’s first public school. The announcement was made today [19/6/18] by the local Member for Monaro, Mr John Barilaro MP.

By the time the new school opens, there will be about 1000 primary school-aged children living in the Googong area - enough to fill the new school on opening day. A growing number are under the age of five and parents are excited to know their school journey will start close to home.

The new school is expected to be built on a prime site, adjacent to the new Googong North Village Centre, on 2.8 hectares of land set aside by Googong developers Peet and Mirvac.

Googong Project Director Malcolm Leslie said the decision was timely as there was a rapidly growing population of school aged children in the area and existing schools in the region were bursting at the seams.

“The Government’s decision will be a big relief for the hundreds of local families who have children coming through the system,” Mr Leslie said. “We are grateful to Mr Barilaro for taking a strong lead on this issue.

“Demand in Googong is unlikely to slow down any time soon. We expect the population will be half as big again in two years’ time and we are investing heavily to ensure our community has the best facilities when it needs them.

“Googong’s first private school, The Anglican School Googong (TASG), has been a runaway success. It opened with junior primary and early years in 2015. Next year, the first Year Eights will start and, by 2022, the school will go right up to Year 12.

“TASG has made a huge contribution to the development of Googong’s community and we are excited that families will have more choice and another great resource when the new public school comes on line.”

Earlier this year, Googong unveiled plans for the township’s biggest expansion yet - a $143 million town centre that will bring 1800 new homes, 4500 residents and hundreds of jobs to the ACT region. Another K-12 public school is proposed in the future.

The announcement tops a raft of infrastructure developments at Googong so far this year including:

Construction of the Googong North Village Centre shopping centre, with an 1100sqm IGA supermarket, café/bar, gym, GP, dentist, pharmacy, butcher, hairdresser and beautician, restaurant, community centre and childcare centre.
Work starting on Googong Common which will incorporate multiple sports fields, netball courts, a tennis centre, Indoor Sports Centre and 4000sqm sports club
$30 million allocated by the NSW Government to duplicate Old Cooma Road and improve access to Googong
$900,000 in Government funding to build secondary facilities at The Anglican School Googong
